Living on one paycheck is almost impossible today. However, with children it is not always feasible for Mom and Dad to both have a job away from home. Taking time away from the children, daycare expenses and needing a second car are some typical drawbacks. This is where a home based business works best.
Home based businesses can be very profitable but it is easy to waste time and money without the proper knowledge.
Experience has shown that there are three fundamental requirements that a dependable home based business must meet.
Requirement #1 – It must have a low start up cost.
Time is of the essence. If start-up costs are high the home business will take longer to make a profit. Minimal cost also lowers the entry barriers for most individuals or families who are just starting a home business.
Requirement #2 – Set up and maintenance must be easy.
Complicated home businesses are difficult to set up and maintain. Frustration can creep in increasing the likelihood that you will give up before you see a profit. Nothing builds confidence more than starting a business with easy set-up instructions and simple maintenance requirements.
Starting a home based business is all about making time and doing the things you enjoy with your family, not creating a time sucking monster to replace your job. The first two requirements of a good home business lead naturally to the third.
Requirement #3 – Return on Investment (ROI) must be quick.
If the profits are poor after spending a reasonable amount of time developing the home business then it is easy to get discouraged and throw in the towel. How long is reasonable? If this is your first venture with a home business, plan for weeks and not months. With some home based businesses such as affiliate marketing it’s possible to see a good ROI within days. This may not be the norm but does demonstrate what is possible.
Is this too simple? These three requirements may be fundamental but the devil is in the details. Starting a home based business will keep you busy. It is always easiest to start with something that interests you or that you already have experience doing. Whatever home business you start make sure that it meets the three requirements presented above. Never complicate your efforts otherwise you will quickly get inundated with unproductive details and waste time and effort.
May your home based business be a great success.
